CH1 Progress Update
Hey guys, I know you've probably seen/played the first scene, which is mostly a proof of concept. You've also probably seen how shit it is. Well no longer! I've consulted with my reviewer and while it took forever to come to a concrete foundation of what this game actually is, we've finally started development of chapter 1.
Basically, the script is going through some final iterations, tweaks here and there, but the timeline is solidified. This represents the first third, and the tweaks/edits will be the second third. The last third will be going into more depth, writing the dialogue, the actual stuff you will see and appreciate (hopefully!)
The audio I've gotten feedback on and I've got quite alot of sources for good music. I'm a big music guy myself so it wouldn't feel exactly right to just upload some repetitive annoying freeuse ambient track. Most people will probably play their own music regardless. BUT I'm hoping to add a radio of sorts with a large assortment of custom songs. I just need to finish the script and then I can overview the game and add some fitting tracks.
The coding is simple enough, but this is my first time using ren'py, so there are lots of fundamental tricks and tips I need to learn, and development my own workflow of how I'm gonna do stuff. There's also some interesting gameplay mechanics I haven't seen before coded, and alot more of the behind the scenes stuff.
Visuals are going to take the longest, honestly I don't see myself finishing this chapter until the end of the year unfortunately. There is alot of camera tricks, lighting tricks, post processing, engine and tricks I need to learn. This first chapter will take the longest no doubt, hopefully next year after I've learnt some stuff the pace will speed up to three updates a year, and then lastly four a year.
Each update should be around an hour of content, at least thats the goal. As for how many chapters I'm going to have, theoretically it could be infinite, and I just work on it until I'm happy. With this type of game it can sort of be episodic if that makes sense, but there will at the VERY LEAST be ten chapters, if not like 24 for a full day of content.
Dialogue, Music and Photoshop are pretty much my only strong suits in all of this, I'm a slow but thorough learner so please be patient with me as I figure out these frankly janky tools I'm using. I'm very much used to being the ideas guy, and just been frustrated at my inaction to execute on those ideas.
As for these devlogs, I'm looking to do them twice a week. Once a week feels too infrequent for this very volatile stage of development and would be unfair to you guys who are looking forward to the game. I have to build confidence for the both of us that this is gonna happen after all.
That's all, thanks for all the support, its sort of baffling. I do have a patreon created but really, don't support it until at least this first chapters done, I'd feel shit about getting money for this crap in its current state. The good ol fashioned discord server will also be up alongside the first chapters release.
And remember, overcome.
